Tijuana, Mexico (May 2024) - Service Trip Recap
Dates: May 4-5, 2024
Location: Tijuana, Mexico
What an amazing weekend of service in Tijuana! Our team of 11 consisted of new participants and several long-term HFK alumni - making it a great combination for the variety of service projects. Working alongside the young adults of Search Tijuana, our team served by doing food distributions, fútbol (soccer) with children, and a special visit to a children’s care home.
Learn more about their event-filled weekend below!
Day 1
On Saturday, the team got right to work as they arrived to the partner site in Tijuana. Thanks to donations from the team, they were able to prep and distribute food bags for the Antorcha community. Our team had the opportunity to hand deliver them to the community at the chapel and via home visits with the support from Search Tijuana. 🇲🇽🧺🤝
After lunch, the team got a tour of the special education school, Escuela Cares. Back at the church, the team ran a small soccer clinic for the local community kids. The red team (Big Dawgs) took the win in the mini soccer tournament. The team enjoyed some delicious dinner before heading to the retreat center for a team devotional. ⚽️🏆🙏
One of the highlights of the day was working together as a big team (11 participants total). With a team of this size, they got a lot accomplished and were able to serve a lot of people. It was a beautiful experience. 💚
Day 2
On Sunday, the team attended early morning mass and had a traditional Mexican breakfast of chilaquiles, beans, and eggs. ⛪️🍳🇲🇽
They prepped some equipment and headed to the community of La Antorcha to host a soccer clinic. Due to the rainy weather, it took some extra encouragement to get the kiddos to come out to play. But, they eventually showed up to the field ready for fútbol! ⚽️🌧🙌
Later in the afternoon, the team headed to a care home with some young adults from Search Tijuana. They played games, danced, broke piñatas, colored, painted, and enjoyed some delicious tacos. The team was very happy to have spent the afternoon with the kids in the care home who had powerful stories of resiliency. 🎨🪅🌮
After an eventful weekend, the team crossed the USA/Mexico border and headed home! 🇲🇽➡️🇺🇸
✨ Special Mention ✨
Our team would like to give a very big thank you to all the donors who supported this trip! Like most HFK trips, our teams raise monetary and in-kind donations to assist with the projects that happen on our service trips but also to support the mission of our partners.
In less than 24 hours, donors came together to fund $875 for this trip! With those funds our team was able to purchase: sports equipment, craft supplies, games, prizes, adult diapers, bedding, cleaning supplies for the school, water for the soccer clinic participants, and a few other materials needed for the weekend. Our team also brought along donations of adult/children clothing & shoes, puzzles, board games, and a scooter. Interested in donating in the future? Click here to learn more.
We are so thankful for the opportunity to join our partners in Tijuana for our 5th weekend service trip. This being a new option for short-term service experiences with HFK, we are delighted that more of our HFK Family has been interested in this type of experience.
We look forward to releasing our Tijuana dates for December 2024 in the fall!
