HFK Service Day 2024
Date: October 19, 2024
Location: Moraga, California
Our third annual HFK Service Day was a success, thank you to all who participated in person and from afar!
A total of 14 volunteers helped gather, sort, and pack over 950 lbs of physical donations into 22 duffle bags. These duffles are now “Ready to Fly” on our International Service Trips next season.
Additionally, a total of $50 was donated towards specific donation requests for our partners.
NOTE: On each of our International Service Trips, we ask each participant to take one or two 50lb duffle bags filled with physical donations for our partners and the kids. These donations are items we’ve gathered and/or items specifically requested by our partners. Some examples of requested donations have been lawn mower parts, tubs of peanut butter, weighted blankets for therapy sessions, specific sized soccer cleats for a team, and sports socks to complete a uniform!
The day started with setting up the workspace into three sections: sorting, packing, and weighing! As volunteers arrived, they got straight to work with sorting donations from bags that they had brought or that we already had from previous drop-offs. Each item that was sorted went into categories: clothes, shoes, toys, sporting equipment, school supplies, etc.
Once all participants arrived, we gathered for introductions and to explain the process and purpose of our service day. There were some people who reconnected after having served together a while back and others who met for the first time!
After a quick intro, we got back to work and continued sorting. Once all items had been sorted into their respective categories, we packed them into duffles and weighed them. Once they were at 50lbs, we labeled them and added them to our inventory list to keep the contents and bags organized.
Over 20 duffle bags were packed and are now ready to be taken by trip participants that fly out of the Bay Area on our upcoming International Service Trips!
After a collaborative afternoon of service, some participants went to lunch together and reflected further on the service experience.
We are very thankful for our partner church, Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church (MVPC), for housing our donations and allowing us to use their space for the service day!
